At New Story, culture and people are #1 and have been since we first started. As Head of People & Culture, your focus will be “full stack,” meaning you’ll own the People and Culture function and help us build a world-class culture. (The great news is that our starting point is an eNPS of 87.5.)

We’re looking for a dynamic and strategic leader who can drive change throughout the organization. You’ll work to level up managers (and be wind in their sails), build relationships with future top talent, scale our team across the U.S. and Mexico and champion our culture and values.

You’ll have a tremendous amount of autonomy and responsibility to work alongside our executives, managers, and team to bring in new ideas, iterate/stop legacy initiatives, and get creative along the way. You will be responsible for building and professionalizing people processes that are set to scale while maximizing engagement throughout the team member lifecycle. In addition, you will have the opportunity to lead new initiatives like partnering with DEI experts to promote diversity and inclusion initiatives and creating alignment in a remote work environment. 

You must be a natural leader, with a track record of successfully scaling HR operations in a high-growth environment. You should have the ability to operate at high levels while being willing to get into the weeds of the work and provide excellent internal customer service to the team. To thrive in this role, you must be mission-driven, organized, strategic, and care deeply about people.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategies to attract, develop, engage, and retain top talent
  • Collaborate with leadership on org design and workforce planning to strategically scale the organization as we go through new rounds of fundraising
  • Contribute to strategic planning and annual OKR processes
  • Advise and educate the Executive Team on people operations strategies, best practices, and methodologies
  • Develop or iterate upon current HR processes and systems to maximize engagement and drive high performance; ensure smooth implementation and adoption of new processes and policies across the organization
  • Manage and grow the People and Culture team over time; providing support, direction, and professional development opportunities to your team (currently: a People Ops Associate and Internal Recruiter)
  • Oversee full-cycle HR, including talent acquisition, onboarding, learning & development, performance management, compensation & benefits, and offboarding
  • Develop and execute culture initiatives to foster cohesiveness across our SF-, ATL-, Mexico-based and remote staff
  • Manage team member benefit programs and recommend upgrades to our comp and benefits package to keep us competitive in the market
  • Conduct team member engagement surveys and create action plans based on results
  • Lead implementation of DEI best practices, with the support of a DEI Consultant,  into all HR processes
  • Plan team member education, trainings, events, and summits
  • Resolve team member relations issues and provide internal customer service
  • Oversee and/or outsource compliance and risk management.

Who You Are

  • You have experience creating teams where individuals grow and thrive, building new infrastructure, and improving existing processes using data and feedback
  • You thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and have proven success leading business transformation projects including process improvement and change management initiatives
  • You have knowledge of best practices and industry standards in full-stack HR, but you thrive when working on team member engagement, L&D and/or performance management
  • You are an excellent people manager who has the ability to establish trust and credibility with diverse people at all levels
  • You have experience coaching team members through difficult issues like underperformance and interpersonal conflict with a people-first mindset
  • You have high emotional intelligence. You approach interpersonal relationships with self-awareness and empathy
  • You have a growth mindset and model a culture of continuous improvement by seeking out feedback from others
  • You’re a problem-solver. You understand that everything has trade offs and how to balance those when making bets and decisions
  • You are an adept listener and a thoughtful writer and communicator

  • Maternity and Paternity Leave. Mothers are given up to 12 weeks paid time off post birth/adoption. Fathers can choose to take up to 4 weeks paid time off post birth/adoption. We strongly recommend mothers and fathers to take the full time.
  • Adoption Reimbursement. For families who are willing to adopt, thank you! New Story will reimburse eligible team members up to $10,000 for adoption related expenses.
  • Team Summits. Every 6 months we have a full team summit where we have fun, reflect, and plan for the upcoming quarter. Past trips have been in Tahoe, CA and Whidbey Island, WA.
